KGC Ginseng Corporation’s Lee Sun-woo, 21, recorded a team-high 18 points (two service blocks each) and a 46.67% attack percentage against Pepper Savings Bank in Group A of the 2023 Gumi Dodram Cup Professional Volleyball Tournament at Gumi Park Jung-hee Gymnasium on February 2.
Thanks to Lee’s performance, KGC Ginseng defeated Pepper Savings Bank 3-1 (14-25, 25-10, 25-18, 25-19). KGC Ginseng advanced to the semifinals after finishing second in the group behind Hyundai E&C.

Speaking after the match, Lee Sun-woo said, “We were nervous to win against Pepper Savings Bank. We were able to win because we helped each other well in the tension. I feel good.”
KGC Ginseng Corporation did not have any strength in the first set. They lost the first set 14-25. After calling the second timeout of the first set, KGC Ginseng head coach Ko Hee-jin reprimanded the players, saying, “You guys go over there and play.
Lee Sun-woo said, “We played the first set with a lot of nerves, and it didn’t go well. I wanted to do it from the beginning,” he said.
Lee was named to the 16-player roster for the women’s national volleyball team, which is coached by Cesar Hernandez Gonzalez. After three weeks of training, the team will compete at the 2023 Asian Women’s Volleyball Championship in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, in late August.
Instead of playing outside hitter, Lee was named as an opposite spiker. It’s not an unfamiliar position. She played outside hitter for Cesarho last year and is currently the team’s starting outside hitter at the tournament in Gumi, Gyeongbuk.
“As an outside hitter, you have to be more responsible in the offense,” says Lee. Of course, I’m comfortable hitting from the outside hitter position, but I try not to worry about the position, whether it’s an outside hitter or an outside hitter. I don’t have a problem with hitting from the outside hitter position.”
Lee continued, “This off-season, I focused on getting in shape after my vacation. We changed our team color to speed volleyball. We need to focus on connecting more and more.”
From this tournament, the V-League switched from the Star Ball to the Mikasa Ball. “When we attack, we have to hit with all our strength,” said Lee. It puts a lot of pressure on the receivers,” said Lee.
