Coach Choi, who took office in November 2021 and saved Gangwon from relegation crisis after falling to 11th place in the season, was forced to step down without completing his third season.

Coach Choi led Gangwon to 6th place (14 wins, 7 draws, 17 losses) last season and was recognized for his leadership by nurturing new stars such as Yang Hyeon-jun, but this year he struggled.

Gangwon has been sluggish with 2 wins, 6 draws and 10 losses in 18 games since the start of the 2023 season, and is in 11th place after the lowest-ranked Suwon Samsung (2 wins, 3 draws, 13 losses).
