Hanwha’s new outfielder, Nick Williams, 30, raises expectations from the get-go. Williams signed with Hanwha on April 18 for a total of $450,000. He was selected to replace Brian O’Grady. He made his KBO debut on July 27 against KT in Daejeon. He went 0-for-3, but made a number of impressive plays. His diving catch in the top of the seventh inning was typical. At the end of the seventh inning, he recorded his first RBI with a push ball. The next day, he was even hotter. He roared with two doubles and scored a run.

A new challenge. Williams made his Major League Baseball (MLB) debut in 2017 with the Philadelphia Phillies, where he played in 294 games until 2021. In 2022, he moved to Mexican baseball. He learned about the KBO during the COVID-19 pandemic. He was introduced to ESPN’s coverage. “I thought, ‘Why not play in Korea? I was very surprised when my agent contacted me about it. It was 6 a.m. and I couldn’t go back to sleep,” he laughs.

She seemed mesmerized by the passionate support. Fans cheered lavishly for each of Williams’ plays. “I’m very excited and happy,” Williams said. “It’s unbelievable, the noise, the atmosphere in the stadium, it’s unbelievable. It just keeps the energy going,” he smiles. He’s also getting to know the Korean culture. “It’s been very warm and welcoming, and my teammates have been very welcoming and nice to me. The food I’ve eaten in Korea has been delicious,” he says, giving it a thumbs up.

He has a special affection for his family. He has a tattoo of the kanji character 愛 (love) and his mother’s name on his wrist. “I’m a huge Naruto (Japanese anime) fan,” Williams says. There’s a character named Gaara, and I got the 愛 (character) because it was written on my forehead. It means love.” Number 3 also has a story. “My brother’s favorite number was three. I wore it all the way through high school. He passed away in a car accident, and I thought it would be meaningful to wear the number 3,” she explains.
